He had a grim expression on his face as he ordered Joey and Kendrick to take him. And before Kaya could process what happened next, Connor was tugging her arm and pulling her away from the body. “KAYA!” he shouted, finally getting through to her. “What are you doing here?”

She was trembling from head to toe, her mouth agape as she struggled to form words. “Byron…” she paused, a shaky whimper tore from her throat. “Byron is innocent!”

Luther watched the house for any signs of life. As much as she’d told him she had no need for him or his help, she didn’t waste any time sending a distress signal when things got too gritty. Messing with a Beta of another pack and someone who he wouldn’t trust as far as he could throw him it was bound to happen. Then again, he didn’t trust anyone but himself but he knew that sooner or later Giselle would very much get stabbed in the back by Drew. The smell of blood lured him closer towards the territory line and he dropped to the ground in attack mode with the sense that at any moment, he’d get his hands dirty.

Officer Charles Riley had been coming over for weeks now helping the Cranes plan and plot. He wanted to learn all he could about wolves and the way they first manifested. Though Harley could answer his questions, all of them had he wanted to, he thought it best to leave him in the dark about a few things. Telling him only what he felt he should know he intentionally gave him anger, purpose and focus towards destroying all the wolves and ridding the town of their furry asses.

It didn’t hurt that the Cranes had a law enforcement officer in their back pocket in case anything like the full moon situation were to occur again. But it also hindered them in more ways than they were willing to admit. As with wolves, hunters are born into the game prepared and ready to kill any hairy monster that comes their way; it’s nature’s way of maintaining the balance. They were not able to stay on task knowing the very mortal cop was riding their tails every step. Unable to use all of their abilities with him present, they stuck to using him for their ends.

Jacobi waited near the southern end of the park as Harley setup on the north. Their “bait” was tranquilized and laying in the center of the area near a small fountain. His wound was severe enough to cause bleeding but hidden from view from other people passing by so as not to cause alarm from the humans. They would just see him as some drunken, homeless guy passed out in the park. That was nothing out of the ordinary and nothing that warranted a second look.

He breathed in the night air as he waited. The azaleas and nearby gardenias were sweet but they masked the scent of anything else. Curiosity shot through him as he wondered if there were wolves watching him at that very moment. Quietly stalking him like a piece of meat that he was none the wiser for. The moon was high tonight and though it wasn’t completely full, it was getting there and he knew pretty soon they’d have more than enough action to occupy their time.
